Due to the nature of how these races turn out: being one person in time zone A racing another person in time zone A to end the race off and get broken down and demoralized by a player in timezone B who beats their time, as well as many other problems occurring with the current system a few proposals have been put forth.

- Limiting the attempts.
- Awarding for other places.
- shortening the time.
- Not allowing winner to race again in the next race.

The conversation in game went as follows:

ferv:Devs, race proposal: 5 gold = 1 attempt at race capped at 30 gold.
jerm: paying per attempt is ridiculous
guan: I think gold is a bit too hard-earned for that proposal, personally.
gors: if that s the problem make so the winner of the race cant compete in the next race
jerm: I think limiting attempts is bad. Becuase it dissuades me from racing and it benefits only people who have done the same course over and over and over.so its a win more philosophy punishing new players
guan: I think you're right Jerm. The answer is not negative but positive reinforcement.
jerm: and handing a bag of gold to people who have trained the map
ren: The idea about not letting the 1st place participate in the next race sounds interesting, making him a honorary participant, like the creator of the map
ferv: but then it will bounce back and forth between two people

The main problem is that players try really hard and spend lots of time on races and seem to get no reward.

Thanks for the post fervour, it sums up very well the problems and suggestions that were raised;

Races are 'pure bet' events, all the money that comes in, will be given at the end of the race 100%, no more, no less - they don't generate gold from nothing, and are not a gold sink as well.

The idea of paying extra for more attempts can really discriminate difficult areas, since players might need several attempts to get to the finish line; If we say that they only pay when they reach the finish line, players will just be afraid to touch the finish line and waste money in vain - ultimately hurting the replays we all love to watch so much :)

Awarding other places is a great idea - and we have discussed this before (just not implemented yet) - basically, the money will be divided between a certain percentage of the players - meaning, more participants will produce more winners (the 'top' winners will obviously get more then the other winners).

The 24 hours races are good since the person who started it can come back 24h later (which usually means it's their usual playing time) and see what is going on. The other players need to notice the race result timers and figure out if they want to participate for themselves.

Not allowing the winner to race in the next race may help a bit, but like you said, it can easily bounce back and forth between two (or more) players.

The best solution is indeed to have a few winners (the first place will not win 100% of the amount, and will shed some % to lower places).

Thanks again.
Races will stay as they are for the time being, but we will definitely continue to work on them in the future.

Another option would be to have level caps where if a level 5 activates a race only level 5 and below may take part

My suggestions for racing is:

-Winners can't race on the same level for one round. He may join as honorary participant, not winning anything for it;
-Every place gets money, proportionally to the place the player got. If two or more people get the same time, the price is 'doubled', that is, both get the same amount of gold, disregarding wheter if the sum of the prizes exceed the total of bet money (it isn't fair to just prize only one person, seeing that both had worked hard equally);
-Winning also increases a 'handicap' counter. So, if a person wins a lot of races, he will fill the counter up and he may not participate on any race until the bar depletes itself;
-Give a random participant an extra small bonus of 50 gold (example). Since it's random, any person may get it (even the ones who didn't race well). This will encourage people to try, even if they aren't really good at racing;
--Obviously, Honorable participants aren't accounted in the small bonus giveaway.
-Limit EVERYONE's moves to the level you're racing in. This will give everyone an equal percentage of winning (though this will also make races uninteresting to see... The fun is also using the moves you've got in a creative manner so I am skeptical about this option).
--Maybe set everyone's level equally to the person who started the race? This way, if a Lv. 5 person started a race, everyone will be Lv. 5 temporarily; if a Lv. 10 person started a race, everyone will be Lv. 10 temporarily...

KEYPOINTS:

-Make races a good thing for everyone;
-Incentive unskilled players to race, and therefore get better at it;
-Make racing fun and interesting without handicapping players' creativity to overcome obstacles;
-Despite being highly competitive, make it a friendly place.

Additional suggestion:

Make the race flag say that YOU DON'T NEED TO GRAB ALL SHURIKENS TO COMPETE IN A RACE. Some racers aren't aware of this, it seems. If there was a very explicit sign about that everyone would race properly.

or perhaps include the option to have a grab the shurikens race

I think there should be a level cap while racing- certain moves such as fast slide and the lunge can give others certain advantages while racing (Gors, I'm looking at your Lunge move in one of the races... :D)
