This topic addresses both newcomers and veteran players alike.

Below Kryll is a world forged by the players; And you too can easily add your very own areas (and maybe you already have.)
In order to understand how this works out, and how to make better areas, you are encouraged to read the following guidelines and tips.

Creating areas is easy!

You can always check our in-game editor and experiment with it without effecting the world. It's very intuitive and a very fun experience!

/images/forum/sandbox.png

Make sure to explore a bit, so you can get a good idea of what you can do (and there is plenty you can!)
You can only create an area where there is 'Void' (absence of any other areas).

/images/forum/void.png

When you venture into the void, assuming you have enough gold - you will be prompt whether or not you'd like to own this Void and make your new area there.

/images/forum/prompt.png

When you enter the void you are prompted for creating a new area.

When you first create an area it is "Under-Construction". People will be able to see you're doing some work-in-progress there, but will not be able to see what or play in it until you publish that area. Once an area is published, you can freely modify it without interrupting others from playing it.

Sometimes you are not allowed to create an area within the void. This can be due to several reasons, be it lack of gold or your character level being too low, perhaps someone is already creating there (look at the map and check by pressing the M key), or any other restriction. You will be notified why you couldn't create an area by the Grim Reaper himself, who will tell to you why.

Under-Construction areas

/images/forum/draft.png

  • Under-Construction areas (areas that have not been published yet) have a 48 hours time limit. However, you don't have to publish them within 48 hours. Its enough to save a 'Draft', just to indicate you are still working on your area.
  • Saving a draft will reset the counter to 48 hours once again.
  • If you did not publish or save a draft for more then 48 hours - it will return to be Void, allowing anyone to claim it (your creations in that area will be lost). You'll be refunded 90% of the Gold and Trophies you spent in that area.
  • If you wish, you can disown an area and get refunded instantly. You may not disown an area if it is already published.
  • To make sure you make it on time, you can choose to receive a warning e-mail 6 hours before your unpublished area is expired. Do this from your E-Mail settings accessible from your Profile page.

Published areas

  • Once your area is published, players will see it as a new area in the world, and be able to enter it and play in it.
  • You can (and are encouraged) to keep editing that area, fixing issues or adding cool things to it as you see fit - whenever you wish.

Area ranks

Areas get ranked from 1 to 10. The higher the rank of an area - the more fun players had while playing it.
Until 5 players manage to reach the shrine in your area (excluding yourself as the owner of that area), your area remains unranked.

Ranking information can be viewed when looking at the map (open the map by pressing the M key in-game), and then either pressing tab, or holding the right mouse button.

/images/forum/rank.png

If your area got a low rank, do not despair! You can always change it and make it better. Check what players wrote in your area's guestbook for more information.

The area's rank is determined by ratio of completions and +1's your area got.
For example, if your area got between 60% and 70% +1's, it will be ranked 7.

The higher your area's rank, the more Gold, Trophies and Fame you will get for each +1 it got.
The rank always updates based on the number of completions and +1's - and will most likely change as more players get to player and complete your area.

What is a 'Passage Area'?

/images/forum/passage.png

  • Passage areas are basically hallways that cannot be completed; Their shrine is blocked.
  • A passage used to be a regular area, but was deemed to be without any meaningful content.
  • If your area became a passage, you're always free to modify it and request the "passage" to be removed from it after you fixed the issue at hand - use the reporting system (the red exclamation mark in-game) to request your area to be un-passaged.
  • A bad rank is not a reason for making it a passage.
  • If you play in an area which clearly took the creator a couple of minutes tops to make, and is basically just a shrine and an empty corridor - you can use the report system and request it to be turned into a passage (this process is by no means automatic, and will always be reviewed by and admin).

Creating impossible or nearly impossible areas

  • Your areas are ranked by players who manage to reach the shrine within them. If players cannot reach the shrine, or nearly nobody manages to reach it, you will not gain a lot of gold, fame and trophies out of that area.
  • It's generally good to read what other players have to say in your area's guestbook and make sure your area is not only challenging, but also fun.

No game-play areas

  • In Below Kryll you'll find a large variety of areas. In some areas you can easily collect the pickups and reach the shrine. That is generally OK as long as the area has some kind of additional content which is worthwhile (art/music/story or anything else of interest).
  • Areas with nothing of interest in them will be in risk of becoming passage areas.

Tips for planning an area

Don't put all your eggs in one basket

When playing with the editor or even just exploring around Below Kryll, you may get a LOT of ideas for your very own creation. Though you are free to do as you please, it's generally more efficient to spread ideas over several creations, instead of overloading one single area.
You'll get more trophies and will avoid puzzling the other players with too many challenges.

Top floors mean less-skillful players

As you play Below Kryll, your skill will grow and you will find more and more challenges easier to pass.
If you're planing an area in one of the first few floors, do not forget that they are mostly played by newcomers, so try to maintain a difficulty level that is reasonably passable.
It is not enforced in any way, as you are free to create your area however you wish, but note that you will likely lose many +1's if you publish a difficult area in the first couple of floors.
A common example is the 'Dash jump' you can perform using an Amanita mushroom. A move that is widely known by veteran players, but unrealized by newcomers. Specifically for floor 1, if you intend the player to use such advanced moves, it is recommended that you place a sign or some other helpful text item (NPC/Plaque/etc...) explaining what needs to be done.
If you manage to teach your players a trick they did not know - they will most likely love you for all eternity.

Connection between two areas

If you want to continue a story or puzzle from one area to another, there is no need to physically connect them, assuming you have enough trophies to place a Warp-gate. You can use the Warp-gate epic item to send players from one area of yours to the other.
Warp gates are also a good way to attract players from remote areas you own to a place where you own multiple areas already.

im struggling to work out how to get a trigger to activate a log door - sry noob question ! help please !

A log door will activate whenever the set trigger is activated. However there are three "modes" for the log

OPEN: the door starts out closed, and a trigger OPENS it forever
CLOSED: the door starts out opened, and a trigger CLOSES it forever
SET: opens and closes indefinitely, depending on the activated triggers

Sometimes, if you forget to change the door mode and leave it on SET, triggers won't activate it permanently, and will remain closed.

Imagine of triggers like light switches. Some actions, like killing enemies, or collecting shuriken, are like taping the switch - so the energy will light the lightbulb once.

Now, actions like keeping a koyo flower pressed is like holding the light switch, activating it as long as the button is held.

hope this helps
