what tool to use to create sprites? i have some key item ideas to submit and i have no idea how to create a sprite.

Just any paint program probably works. You create something pixel by pixel normally by using some sort of pencil tool.

For my Marvel-Kryll artsy-levels, I use Aseprite to make or edit all the sprites. It's awesome software, kinda like photoshop for small pictures.
But like Eeveelott says, you can make sprites in almost anything, paint, photoshop, gimp, or even in online editor like "Make Pixel Art" or Pixilart :)
