Ok, I have changed my avatar to a yoshi face three times already, and when I get back on the game later, it has been reset to baby Mitsu every time.

A bit late but better than never, we have a new avatar changing page that is sure to fix your issue.
Either access from the character page in the game (click on your avatar icon there)
or just go to the profile tab in the site (only shows if you're logged in) and click on your avatar to change.
